Safety advice from the RNLI

While enjoying a range of activities on the coast, it is important to keep yourselves and the people around you safe. You can see a diverse selection of activities and how to enjoy them safely on the RNLI website.

Power Kiting

Power kiting can be done at Fraisthorpe Beach.

When power kiting please be considerate of other beach users and obstacles on the beach, such as tractors and Second World War bunkers! More information and safety guidelines for power kiting can be found on theĀ RNLI website.

Kite Flying

Kites can be fun to fly, particularly on coastal area where wind is typically stronger. However, be mindful this hobby can be dangerous, both for participants and other people in the area, so care should be exercised when in the vicinity of flying kites irrespective of size.

Parents are required to supervise young persons for their own safety as well as that of others.

Metal detecting

Everyone beach combing or using metal detecting equipment should familiarise themselves with the law concerning protected sites and follow the current advice on the handling, care and storage of archaeological objects.

Visit eastridingmuseums.co.uk for metal detecting guidelines

When metal detecting, minimise any ground/sand disturbance and follow the code of practice issued for metal detecting in England and Wales.

Call the Police and coastguard and notify them if you find anything that may be suspicious or dangerous.

European Open Beach Championship

Visit the EOPC page for full details of the annual Paul Roggerman angling competition.

Off Road Vehicles

No mechanical-powered vehicles (e.g. quad bikes, dirt bikes, ATV's, pick-ups etc.) are allowed on East Riding's beaches or associated dunes without written permission. Any vehicles without permission that access these areas will be deemed in breach of the law and may be prosecuted.

Swimming and water safety

Care should be taken at all times when swimming in the sea. During the summer holidays, the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) lifeguard service is in operation at the resort beaches and they promote a 'swim between the flags' service, which means they will patrol a designated area of the beach and sea.

On occasions, it is necessary to restrict activities and even close a beach and access to the water. Where this occurs we follow the procedures identified by RNLI water safety advice (external site).

There is no swimming allowed in the ponds and lakes found in any of our nature reserves.

Water safety campaigns

Learn more about how to #enjoywatersafely with these water safety campaigns supported by East Riding Leisure. Whether you're going for a walk along part of our coastline or riverbanks, visiting one of the many local nature reserves, or heading out for a day at the beach, know how to keep yourself and your family safe in and around water.

These campaigns only last a week or so, but water safety is important all year round. You can read more about each campaign and download a variety of resources for kids and adults on the East Riding Leisure website.
