Description

Welcome to Hornsea Beach

Hornsea beach has a tiered promenade along the landward side.To the north can be seen the picturesque Flamborough Headland, stretching away to the south the golden sands of the East Riding coast.

Hornsea beach is ideal for building sand castles, kite flying or just relaxing. The beach can be the start or finishing point of the Trans Pennine Trail which passes close to Hornsea Mere, the largest fresh water lake in Yorkshire.

Secondary Description

Between the sun rising out of the North Sea and setting spectacularly over the Mere lies the picturesque town of Hornsea offering all the pleasures of a seaside resort.

At the eastern edge of the town lies the sea with a very attractive, award-winning promenade area, and a fine sandy beach. To the north of the promenade lies the Floral Hall. The southern end of the promenade features an array of amusement arcades and children’s rides. Hornsea leisure centre boasts a full size swimming pool, children’s pool, squash courts, sauna and steam rooms, exercise facilities, functions rooms and a cafe and bar. Towards the town centre are the Memorial Gardens - a sheltered, quiet and restful seated area guarded by two famous lions rescued from a cinema in Hull.

To the southwest is Hornsea Mere, Yorkshire’s largest freshwater lake covering many acres. At this Site of Special Scientific Interest you can enjoy rowing, sailing, fishing, motorboat trips and pitch and putt. Bird watchers will be in their element too.

Visiting with Children

There is a small paddling pool outside Huckleberry's cafe, right in the heart of the promenade. The pool is chemically altered and kept to a high standard of cleanliness and safety throughout the year. The pool is right next door to the public toilets and a minute walk from the chalets. Surrounded by seating from the cafe, this is the perfect place for parents to rest with a cup of tea while the kids play in the water.

Children must be supervised by an adult when using the paddling pool at all time. There is a strict no dogs policy in the pool. Please note there are no lifeguards at the pool.

Parking

Large pay and display car parks by the leisure centre with easy access to the town on foot.

Accessibility

Hornsea promenade is split into an upper and lower promenade which is accessible directly from the road which will allow wheelchair users easy access. The best point of entry to the lower promenade is from the corner of Marine Drive near the Hornsea Leisure Centre. There are various ramps from the top to the lower promenade heading North but these are steeper which some users may find difficult to use.

Disabled toilets are found behind Huckleberry’s Cafe next to the Chalets along Marine Drive or in the Hornsea Leisure Centre.

There are several ramps from the lower promenades that will allow wheelchair users access to the beach however, there is no beach wheelchair facility at this resort. Hornsea beach is structured using groynes, some of which cause large drop offs and therefore is not suitable to cross for people with reduced mobility.

Dog ban in affect 1 May to 30 September. Fishing with rod and line banned from 1 May to 30 September.
